tournIQ® Frequently Asked Questions
Warmcare has recently introduced tournIQ® – a one of a kind disposable tourniquet from Sweden, with uniquely designed patented pressure indicator, which helps consistent application of optimum tourniquet pressure to facilitate vein dilation, allowing practitioners of all skills levels to access the vein in first attempt more easily.
Below are some frequently asked questions, which should help solve some of your concern and doubt.
1. How much pressure is applied with tournIQ® when used properly?
60-100mmHg, which is the international standard for tourniquet application in guidelines of different healthcare organizations such as WHO, and is the optimum pressure for most effective vein dilation.
2. What is so special about tournIQ®?
tournIQ® is characterized by with patented distinctive pressure indicator, which instruct caregivers how tight they should pull the tourniquet with clear visual clues, for applying optimum pressure every time with tournIQ®, regardless of practicians’ level of experience.
3. Why will the tournIQ® break under great pressure?
This is a tailored protection mechanism in tournIQ®. When pressure applied by tournIQ® exceed 140mmHg, the tourniquet will break, to protect the patient and prevent discomfort or injuries caused by excessive pressure.
4. Is there any protection mechanism by tournIQ® when the pressure applied is too much?
Yes, tournIQ® will break when the pressure applied by the tourniquet exceeds 140mmHg, to protect the patient and prevent discomfort or injuries caused by excessive pressure.
5. How effective is tournIQ®, compared to average disposable tourniquet in the market?
tournIQ® enables vein dilation 2 times more evident and about four times faster than general single-use tourniquets, so caregivers can easily access the vein within 1 min.
6. How long does it take for the vein to be dilated sufficiently to be clearly visible & palpable with tournIQ®?
With tournIQ®, veins will be clearly visible and palpable within 1 minutes after application. tournIQ® gives the same result after application for 30s compared to applying general tourniquet (at average pressure of 32mmHg) after 2 minutes.
7. Is tournIQ® for everyone?
Yes, tournIQ® is for everyone, especially suitable for elderlies, as their veins are small and less elastic, they are more apt to wiggle and roll under the loose skin when needle is inserted. tournIQ® is designed to help facilitate the process with ease.
8. What is the optimum pressure range marked in tournIQ®?
The optimum pressure range suggest the recommended limb circumferences for application with tournIQ®. If used on smaller/ larger circumferences outside the range, pressure applied by tournIQ® might varies by individuals, resulting in less effective vein dilation compared to when applying tournIQ® on patients with limb size within the optimum range.
9. What if the patient’s limb size exceeds the marked pressure range on tournIQ®?
If tournIQ® is used on larger circumferences exceeding the marked range, this can result in pressure application below optimum, which might result in less effective vein dilation compared to when applying tournIQ® on patients with limb size within the optimum range.
10. What if the patient’s limb size is below the marked pressure range on tournIQ®?
If tournIQ® is used on smaller circumferences below the marked range, this can result in pressure application above 100mmHg, which might result in discomfort and less effective vein dilation compared to when applying tournIQ® on patients with limb size within the optimum range.
11. What makes tournIQ® environmentally friendly?
tournIQ® is produced with Tyvek, a type of recyclable plastic (#2 HDPE) certified with environmental management policy ISO14001. Its superior strength-to-weight ratio allows the total weight of tourniquet to be just 1 gram, which is around 10 times less material consumption in production than an average tourniquet in the market, reducing waste and ensuring sustainability.
12. Can used tournIQ® be recycled in Hong Kong?
The material used to produce tournIQ® is recyclable plastic #2 – HDPE. This material is recyclable in Hong Kong. However, Warmcare do not provide recycling services, so used tournIQ® should be handled just like other single-use recyclable medical supplies, by hospital designated recyclers/ pickup service provider.
13. What makes tournIQ® user friendly?
Practicians can apply optimum pressure with tournIQ® purely based on visual clues of the pressure indicator easily, regardless of their experience. Also, the pull-through design with strong adhesive lock facilitates easy fastening and single-hand release, among other user-friendly designs such as packaging for pulling tourniquet out one piece at a time.
14. How do tournIQ® ensures maximum comfort for patients?
Latex free composition of tournIQ® prevent allergies, and no pinching pull-through design allows secure fastening of tourniquet while providing best user experience for patients.
15. How can hygiene be guaranteed with tournIQ®?
Designed for single use only, this prevents cross-contamination and helps infection control. Once tournIQ® is applied, the pressure indicator will be visually deformed, ensuring used tourniquet can be identified easily.
16. Can tournIQ® be repositioned? For how many times?
Although tournIQ® is designed for single-use only, caregivers can reposition the tourniquet with the adhesive lock, but only for less than 3 times, to ensure the tourniquet remains enough strength to maintain the pressure
17. Is tournIQ® proven effective and certified?
Yes, tournIQ® is CE certified, and fully endorsed by healthcare practicians in Sweden right after launched to market in 2019.
